chapter 19 – ryan

Being with Harper is better than I could have imagined.

I still dream about her at night. Since we’ve been together, the dreams are different, more intense and at times, extremely fucking hot.

Pursuing Harper, I thought it was about the chase. When the chase was over, would I still be interested? I’m not sure why I questioned it, because I’ve fallen even further for her than I thought possible.

I can count on one hand the weeks we’ve been official, and it doesn’t seem like any time at all. Being with her is easy. She has my first and last thoughts every day.

There are times, when we are together, the emotions are overwhelming and it scares me. With all the girls I’ve dated, there hadn’t been one who gave me the feeling of total and complete abandon like she has, and I wonder if this is what love feels like.

After foregoing the Halloween party and spending the evening with her at home alone, I realized this is where I want to be. I’m not the same guy I was three months ago.

My family was planning a trip to Miami to spend the holiday with my aunt. I didn’t want to leave, but Harper nearly pushed me onto the plane. She reasoned time away would be good for us. She was right, but I didn’t want to be the one to say it.

Being in Miami with my aunts and uncles and cousins was quality time, but I missed Harper every day. I couldn’t wait to get back to Stillwater to wrap my arms around her and taste her lips again. The anticipation was intoxicating.

A week in the warm Florida sunshine, playing volleyball on the beach, wave jumping and paddle boarding were good distractions, not to mention my cousins Andrew and Trent bringing me to a beach party where there were plenty of beautiful bikini-clad girls. For the first time in my life, I was disinterested in any girl except the one waiting for me at home.

Harper and I texted daily. I hated not hearing her voice, and restrained myself from calling her every day, and only dialed her number twice. Once after Thanksgiving dinner and late Saturday night. She picked up on the first ring.

“Hey.” Her voice low and quiet.

“Did you have a good day at work?” I ask.

“You want to know how my day was?”

“I want to make sure you’re missing me.”

She laughs. “My day was boring but the diner was busy and…” The loud sound of something breaking, followed by raised voices interrupt her. “Sorry, it’s crazy around here. Did you go to the beach today?”

“Yes. It was crowded and hot, and the only thing I could think of was how much I wanted you there.”

“I miss you too.” A warm feeling spreads through my chest and I have an irresistible urge to leave for home this minute.

“You’ll be home tomorrow, and we’ll…”

“Your house is the first stop after we land.”

She’s quiet now.

“You were wrong. The time apart hasn’t been good for me.
